The School functions under the aegis of Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW) and is affiliated to West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) as well as West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE).
Primary section of the School operates in morning session from 06-30 hrs till 11-00 hrs with a short intermediate recess. It has only English medium, where boys and girls study separately from class-I to class-V. The total student strength in this section is exactly 350. Besides Headmistress, eleven Primary Teachers (PRTs) teach here.
Secondary section and Higher Secondary section of the School operate in day session from 11-15 hrs to 17-15 hrs with an intermediate recess period. There are twenty Trained Graduate Teachers (TGTs), comprising eighteen Subject Teachers and two Physical Education Teachers (PETs). Besides Principal, there are thirteen Post-Graduate Teachers (PGTs). Three Laboratory Demonstrators/Assistants are there as well.
The post of Librarian is presently lying vacant after superannuation of the predecessor and is due to be filled in future. Altogether, there are two Group-C Clerical Staff and fourteen Group-D Staff.
The Secondary section has only English medium, where boys and girls study separately from class-VI to class-X. The total student strength in this section is 413.
The Higher Secondary section has two mediums – English and Bengali. Only boys study here in classes XI-XII. The English medium has Science and Commerce. The Bengali medium has Arts/Humanities and Science. Conversely speaking, Arts/Humanities is taught in only Bengali, Commerce is taught in only English, and Science is taught in both English & Bengali. The total student strength in this section is 228.
Hence, the cumulative student strength of CHS(EM) taking into account Primary, Secondary and Higher Secondary sections stands to be 991.
The School has 22 classrooms. There are two office rooms, one for Principal & his Staff during day session catering to Secondary & Higher Secondary wings, and the other for Headmistress & her Staff during morning session catering to Primary wing. There are two Teachers’ rooms, one for Lady Teachers and the other for Gent Teachers. Campus area of the School is approximately 15 acres.
There are three Laboratories in the first floor for Physics, Chemistry & Biology, and one Laboratory in the ground floor for Geography. The main Library is at the first floor. Earlier, there was another Library at the ground floor, which is now-a-days mostly used as Reading Room by Primary section.
The School has an Auditorium named Vivekananda Auditorium at the first floor, having seating capacity of 400 persons. Earlier, CLW Administration had wrested control of the School Auditorium from CHS(EM) for centralized allocation to miscellaneous institutions for multifarious purposes, however recently reversion of the Auditorium to the jurisdiction of CHS(EM) Authority has taken place. Another Auditorium in the ground floor basement, titled Prashanta Auditorium, is now in defunct state. These Auditoriums were once home to sublime wood sawdust motif/alpana created by Teachers hand-in-hand with students during Saraswati Pujas.
The School has two playgrounds with galleries and two games & sports rooms (one room for indoor games and another for stores). A Computer Centre for training the students of classes VI-VIII is run by a private agency in the premises of the School against fees paid by individual families.
The regular events being conducted at the School are Annual Function including prize distribution & cultural presentations, Annual Sports, Teachers’ Day, Saraswati Puja, Independence Day, Republic Day and Rabindra Jayanti.
The School has been adjudged “the Best School of the Year” by CLW myriad times, the most recent achievement in this regard being winning this award on three consecutive occasions from 2011 to 2013. “The Best Teacher of the Year” award has been conferred upon several Teachers of the School by CLW.
Numerous students of the School have been excelling over decades in academics & profession, in extra-curricular/co-curricular activities like extempore elocution, quiz, debate, recitation, music, essay-writing, painting, theatre, etc, as well as in Scouts & Guides movement, NCC & NSS movement and outdoor games (especially football, swimming & athletics), etc.
CLW being certified as an ISO 14001 organization for its compliance with environmental management system standards, regular surveillance audits of the School are conducted by authorized inspection agency at a periodic interval of six months. Additionally, medical and fire safety audits of the School are also carried out at the same frequency.
